Seedream 5.0 Lite

Seedream is the image model family from ByteDance, the company behind TikTok. Seedream 5.0 Lite was announced on 13 February 2026, after quietly going live on ByteDance's own platforms a couple of weeks earlier. It was the first Seedream to reason about a request before drawing it, and the first that can run a live web search to get its facts straight. That makes it a good fit for infographics, layouts and marketing images, where the details need to be correct as well as good-looking.

Who makes it

The model comes from ByteDance Seed, the company's AI research group. In China it powers the image features in the Doubao chatbot and the Jimeng creative app, known internationally as Dreamina. Businesses can pay to use it through Volcano Engine, ByteDance's cloud service, or its international counterpart, BytePlus.

History

Seedream 2.0 first appeared in Doubao and Jimeng in December 2024. From the start it stood out for understanding prompts in both Chinese and English, and for writing Chinese characters cleanly inside images, which Western models struggled with. Seedream 3.0 followed in April 2025 and could make 2K images directly in around three seconds.

The big leap was Seedream 4.0 in September 2025. It merged image generation and editing into a single model, added 4K output and could produce up to nine consistent images in one go. It was widely seen as ByteDance's answer to Google's Nano Banana. Seedream 4.5 arrived in December 2025 with support for up to fourteen reference images and sharper small text, before the 5.0 generation added reasoning and search.

Why Lite

The Lite version gives up a little quality in exchange for speed and a lower price, which makes it popular with apps that need lots of images quickly. ByteDance also offers Seedream 5.0 Pro for jobs where quality matters more than cost.
