FLUX.2 Pro is the top model in the FLUX family from Black Forest Labs. It makes new images from a text prompt and can also edit existing ones, working from up to ten reference pictures at once so that a face, a product or a brand colour stays the same from one image to the next. It came out on 25 November 2025 and is aimed squarely at professional work: advertising, product shots and editorial images where the picture has to look real and the lettering has to be right.
Who makes it
Black Forest Labs is based in Freiburg, in the corner of Germany its name comes from. It was set up in 2024 by Robin Rombach, Andreas Blattmann and Patrick Esser along with several colleagues. All of them had worked at Stability AI, and the three lead founders had earlier helped create Stable Diffusion as researchers in Munich. That gave the company unusual credibility for a newcomer, and investors noticed: it started with $31 million, and by the end of 2025 backers including Salesforce Ventures, Samsung, Adobe and Canva were offering hundreds of millions more.
History
The first FLUX.1 models arrived in August 2024 in three versions. Schnell was free and open source, Dev could be downloaded for non-commercial use, and Pro was available only through the company's paid service. That split, with some models anyone can run at home and the best one kept behind a paywall, has stayed with the family ever since. FLUX.1.1 Pro followed in October 2024, Kontext added editing by prompt in May 2025, and the FLUX.2 generation launched that November with Pro, Flex, Dev and a small model called Klein.
Under the hood, FLUX.2 pairs a 32-billion-parameter image generator with a separate vision-language model from Mistral that reads the prompt. That second model is a big part of why FLUX.2 copes so well with long, detailed instructions and with text inside images.
Where you'll see it
FLUX turns up in more places than you might expect. It powered image generation in xAI's Grok for a few months in 2024, and Mistral used FLUX Pro in its Le Chat assistant. In 2025 Adobe let Photoshop beta testers use FLUX Kontext for generative fill. Because the open versions are free to download, FLUX also sits behind a huge number of hobbyist apps and community fine-tunes.
Not everyone is a fan. Black Forest Labs has never said exactly which images it trained on, and critics have asked whether that included pictures scraped from the web without permission. The realism that makes FLUX so useful is also what worries people who study misinformation.
